1. Ted Bundy: The Insane Necrophile
Ted Bundy, an American serial killer, was a kidnapper, rapist, and necrophile. He conducted in various states in the USA and confessed to killing 30 women. He used to revisit crime scenes and indulged in sexual acts with the decomposed corpses. This sick necrophile decapitated at least 12 victims and kept their heads as trophies in his house. Aged 42, Bundy was executed on the electric chair in 1989.
His defence attorney, Polly Nelson, said, “Ted, was the very definition of heartless evil.” Ann Rule, who wrote a biography The Stranger Beside Me (1981) on Ted Bundy’s life, had described Bundy as “a sadistic sociopath who took pleasure from another human’s pain and the control he had over his victims, to the point of death, and even after”.
2. Donald Henry Gaskins: The Hitchhikers’ Killer
Gaskins was probably one of the world’s worst serial killers. Many believed that he had killed between 80 to 90 people by mutilating and torturing them. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without any parole. When he was in prison, he even murdered one of his fellow prisoners and so added another murder to his name.
3. Luis Garavito: The Beast
Also known as the Le Bestia (The Beast), this Colombian is reasonably one of the world’s worst serial killers. He admitted that he had tortured, raped and murdered of 147 young boys. However, many believe that the number of victims could be over 300. Columbian law sentenced him a jail of 30 years in 1999. Nevertheless, he may be elligible for parole for good behaviour in jail.
4. Andrei Chikatilo: The Butcher
Also known as the Butcher of Rostov, Andrei Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer who had sexually assaulted, murdered, and mutilated at least 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in Russia. He once said, “
When I used my knife, it brought psychological relief. I know I have to be destroyed. I was a mistake of nature.” After being captured in 1992, he was ordered to be executed by a firing squad in 1994.
5. Charles Edmund Cullen: The Angel Of Death
Cullen served as a nurse in many hospitals although kept switching jobs as he got fired for questionable behaviour from many of them. He confessed that he had murdered 40 elderly patients between 1984 to 2003 in New Jersey.
Charles did this by infecting his patients to death with unprescribed medication. He asserted that he wanted to end the suffering of the patients much like an angel would do. Authorities say he had more than 300 victims. American law had pronounced him life imprisonment.
6. Charles Shobhraj: the dangerous serial killer
Charles Sobhraj, a French thief, was a fraudster and serial killer of Vietnamese and Indian origin. He mainly preyed on Western tourists, especially hippies during the 1970s. Media also termed him as The Splitting Killer and The Serpent, due to his skill at deception and evasion, and also the Bikini Killer due to the attire of his victims. Sobhraj supposedly committed at least a dozen murders. Indian law found him guilty of many murders and so sentenced him a jail of 20 years. However, after his release in 1997, he returned to Nepal and there also he got arrested for many murders. He received a sentence of life imprisonment.
7. John George Haigh: Acid Bath Murderer
Also known as the ‘Acid Bath Murderer’, John George Haigh operated during the 1940s in England. He confessed to the murder of 6 people, although he claimed to have killed 9. Haigh was a professional conman, who seduced wealthy people by his charm and deceit. He then shot his victims to death and used sulphuric acid to dissolve their bodies. He also produced fake papers to sell their possessions. This Acid Bath Murderer was sentenced to death and hanged in 1949.
8. Paul Knowles: The Casanova Killer
People also termed him as the Casanova Killer. Knowles used his grace to make his victims believe him, and later he shot them. This Florida man murdered a total of 18 people, although experts believe that the count might be more. Paul Knowles murdered not only women but also men and children. However, an FBI agent killed him in 1974 when he was trying to escape.
9. Aileen Wuornos: The Monster
A prostitute by profession, Aileen Wuornos had killed seven men in Florida to steal their money. Nevertheless, she claimed that she had to kill them because they had either raped or attempted to rape her. A 2003 movie ‘Monster‘ was based on her life. Charlize Theron won Academy award for playing the role of Aileen Wuornos in that movie. Aileen Wuornos eventually died by lethal injection in 1992.
10. Pedro Rodriguez Filho: The Brazilian Maniac
Pedro Rodriguez Filho was one of the scariest serial killers from Brazil. He had confessed of murdering 71 people and so got the punishment of 128 years imprisonment. Pedro was only 14 when he committed his first killing. He even killed his father who was also serving time for murder. Filho went onto kill at least 47 inmates while imprisoned.
11. Jeffrey Dahmer: The Milwaukee Cannibal
Another dangerous serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, had killed 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. He even indulged himself in necrophilia and cooking body parts of his victim, then eating them. However, a victim of Jeffrey helped the local police to catch him. The law sentenced Dahmer life imprisonment in 1992. But a fellow prisoner beat him to death at the Columbia Correctional Institution two years later.
