Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed 4 wickets as England crumbles in the 1st Test of India tour of England. England skipper Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat first atEdgbaston, Birmingham. Seasoned opener Alistair Cook lost his wicket early but a couple of good partnerships put the English on the right track. Joe Root and Johny Bairstow shared a 104-run stand for the 4th wicket.
At one stage, England were at 216-3 when Root was run out which turned the entire complexion of the inning. England lost its last 6 wickets for just 69 runs. Root and Bairstow contributed 80 and 70 runs respectively. At the end of 1st day’s play, England are 285/9. Sam Curran and James Anderson are batting on 24 and 0 respectively.
Among the Indian bowlers, Ashwin picked up 4 wickets and was the pick of the bowlers. Mohammed Shami scalped 2 wickets. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma claimed 1 wicket each. On day 2, Indian bowlers will look to pick up the last wicket as early as possible. As the momentum is with India, Indian batsmen will be desperate to gain a substantial lead in the first inning and put England under pressure.
