Headaches are agonising, but migraines can be extremely irritating. The constant throbbing headache affects only one side of the head which indicates symptoms of a migraine. Not only headache but also disturbed vision, sensitivity to light & sound and nausea accompanies a migraine. The extreme throbbing pain can last from hours to days.
They tend to affect people aged 15 to 55 years and mostly women than men. There are ways to prevent as well.
In order to understand what a migraine is all about, you must also know the warning signs. It includes tingling sensation on your face, leg or arm, blind spots and flashes of light.
The symptoms of a migraine are divided into three phases which are as follows:
Prior to two or three days you may experience subtle changes. Constipation, intense mood swings, food cravings, frequent urination, neck stiffness, increase in thirst and frequent yawning are the symptoms at the prodrome stage.
The prodrome follows aura which occurs during or before a Migraine. This stage is characterised by zigzag vision, flashes of light, wavy or light vision and sometimes speech disturbances. They last for 20 to 60 minutes at a stretch.
When your migraine reaches this stage, then it usually lasts from 4 to 72 hours until treated. You might experience additional symptoms like a headache on both or just one side of your head, sensitivity to light, pulsing pain, nausea, fainting and vomiting.
In this stage, the symptoms get more intense where people feel drained. In this final stage, people experience confusion, moodiness, dizziness, weakness and sensitivity to light and sound.
What causes Migraine?
The estrogen fluctuations trigger headaches in a lot of women. Many women may develop acute Migraines during menopause or pregnancy.
Tiredness and insufficient sleep, shoulder or neck tension, poor posture, and physical overexertion have all been linked to migraines. Low blood sugar and jet lag can also act as triggers.
Alcohol and caffeine can contribute a lot to trigger migraines. Foods like chocolate, cheese, citrus fruits, and foods containing the additive tyramine can cause a migraine. If you are Skipping meals and dehydration are the potential triggers.
Some sleeping pills, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications, and the contraceptive pill may cause a migraine.
Change in the environment:
Flickering screens, strong smells, second-hand smoke, and loud noises can set off a migraine. Stuffy rooms, temperature changes, and bright lights are also possible triggers.
Excessive consumption of alcohol may lead to extreme Migraines in people.
Stress, depression, anxiety, excitement, and shock can trigger a migraine.
There are ways to prevent a migraine by following simple steps.
1. Stay from light and loud noise
Majority of people suffer a migraine because of bright lights and high volume. You cannot be in darkness all the time or stay away from the noise as they are part and parcel of our daily life. Anyway, you can find a place where you can stay at peace without any chaos.
2. Don’t stick to the TV for a long time
TV is good for entertaining us and informing us but not suitable for a long time. The volume and the brightness level of television will trigger the brain and will lead to migraine. So, adjust the volume and brightness of your TV while watching.
3. Eat the right
When one is suffering from this disease, then he or she should know which food items should items should be taken and which the patient should avoid food items. Once you notice the symptoms try avoiding alcohol, caffeine-rich beverages. Instead eat food that are rich in magnesium.
4. Be careful to weather changes
Weather changes also have its part in a migraine. When it is too hot as in summer because of the sun rays a person can suffer this disease as summer doesn’t suit him or her or can be even on High humidity days also. So during that time a person must stay most of the time inside the house or in a room and avoid staying outside.
5. Say no to stress to prevent a migraine
Sometimes situations are created that gives us stress which is not in our hand, but to avoid it and go out is in our hand. We should react to it so much and should not let it affect our mind very much or else it can give birth to this disease.
6. Don’t use headphones /earphones for a long time
One of the major ways to prevent a migraine is by avoiding the use of earphones/headphones. Putting headphones/earphones and listening loud music in high volume disturbs the brain which causes migraines.
7. Drink adequate water:
Dehydration is also a cause of a migraine so you must drink an adequate amount of water which is a simple way to prevent it.
8. Follow the doctor’s advice
Last but not the least we should go to a recommended doctor and take advice as per the doctor’s advice and follow the routine given to us by him or her.
