West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee, dragged herself in a political war with the centre when a CBI team went to quiz Kolkata police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar on two Ponzi scams on Sunday evening.
The CBI officials were first denied permission and then were whisked to the police station for not taking High Court’s approval for this investigation.
Mamata Banerjee sat for a ‘dharna’ to prevent the investigating officials from questioning Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the chit fund scams. She called it as “the atrocities of the Modi government”.
Bengal CM said “How dare you come to a police commissioner’s home without a warrant? Mr (Ajit) Doval (National Security Advisor) is doing whatever PM wants him to do; he is the one giving all the instructions to CBI”.
Mamata Banerjee- It’s a constitutional breakdown
She further said: “This is unprecedented. They are using some pretext to impose President’s rule in Bengal. This is nothing less than a coup, a super emergency,”
“They want to control everything ‘Gabbar style’. It’s a constitutional breakdown. The Constitution needs to be protected like never. The fear of losing is driving them to desperation. They can resort to anything. This needs to be stopped, and hence my satyagraha.

Today is the third day of her protest. She had skipped her meals and remained awake the entire night on a makeshift dais along with some senior ministers and party members. Many opposition leaders extended their support to the Trinamool Congress chief.
Political parties making anti-BJP alliance by supporting Banerjee
Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the CBI should have first taken permission from the Calcutta High Court and also referred to the full SIT report in the Saradha chit fund scam case.
Talking to ANI, Mr Singhvi said, “I don’t want to comment on what the Supreme Court will decide on this. The Calcutta High Court has clearly said that you can’t do an investigation like this. You (CBI) should have first taken permission from the High Court.”
He, then, added: It is an old case. You can call on the full SIT and ask them. They are ready to answer your queries. But just for harassment, if you do this to humiliate the top police official then what will happen?”
Akhilesh Yadav alleged, “There was CBI row, the centre was scared of a CBI director, now they are trying to scare everyone using CBI. Who has misused the institutions? If someone has politicised the institutions, it is BJP.”
On this CBI issue, Farooq Abdullah, the chairman of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference also has shown his support for Mamata Bannerjee, “Her (Mamata Banerjee) allegation is right. This country is in danger as its becoming dictatorial. They (Central govt) are not masters of this country, people are.”
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on 'if she will continue the Dharna': Let me talk to my leaders, I don’t go alone. Today Chandrababu Naidu is also coming, I will consult other leaders also. I will also consult Naveen Patnaik Ji, then I will let you know. pic.twitter.com/FuncK5K4Ap— ANI (@ANI) February 5, 2019
Odisha’s BJD extends support to Mamata Banerjee
Member of BJD outraged, “Institutional integrity has to be restored after all this infighting. We are a mature democracy and professionalism should be maintained in these issues. Even in Odisha, sudden action of CBI just before panchayat elections in the past and now before general elections smacks of unprofessional conduct…and coloured with political motives.”
Tamil Nadu MP, Kanimozhi, also has lent her support to Banerjee in her endeavour to “save democracy”.
Anyone who cares for Democracy, Federalism and Constitution must stand with Ms @MamataOfficial.— Kanimozhi (கனிமொழி) (@KanimozhiDMK) February 4, 2019

People who are against Mamata Banerjee
On the other hand, many are calling it a high-pitch drama of Mamata Banerjee.
Prakash Javadekar, a member of BJP stated: “Why is Mamata Banerjee on dharna? What is it that she is trying to hide? Why is Kolkata top cop supporting the chit fund prime accused? The accused had mentioned a red diary, pen drives.”
He further added: “Why is Mamata Banerjee running away from inquiry? The probe into chit fund was after Supreme Court order.”
What a loss of face for Mamata Banerjee and the so called "mahagathbandan", which is nothing but an alliance of the corrupt!— Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) February 5, 2019
When Mamata Banerjee decided to sit on a Dharna she received support of many opposition parties who aspire to be in power. Most of them, or their affiliates are today being investigated, prosecuted and in some cases have also been convicted for crimes of corruption.— Arun Jaitley (@arunjaitley) February 5, 2019
Mamtaji is delusional, claiming victory😂When did CBI say that they went 2 arrest Rajiv Kumar? She was BLOCKING the probe by instructing Rajiv to not cooperate in the CBI probe!! Supreme Court has ORDERED him to present himself before CBI, something he didn’t do for 3years•Period— Babul Supriyo (@SuPriyoBabul) February 5, 2019
CBI officials filed an affidavit
The CBI officers filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court yesterday. The investigating team has accused Police chief Rajeev Kumar of being a “potential accused” in the Saradha and Rose Valley Ponzi schemes, the cases.
Mr Rajeev Kumar was investigating. The affidavit also said it was possible that he might have tried to destroy evidence. The hearing in the Supreme Court has already begun.
The Supreme Court said it would come down heavily on Rajeev Kumar if he “even remotely” tries to destroy the evidence.
Supreme Court directed CBI and Police chief to meet at a neutral venue
The Supreme Court today directed Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to cooperate with the CBI.
Supreme Court further instructed Kolkata Police Commissioner and the CBI to meet at a neutral venue. CJI directed the neutral venue to be Shillong. The apex court also says that the probe agency cannot take any coercive step against Kolkata Police Commissioner.
Furthermore, the court also said that he cannot be arrested. The court also added that the 3 parties Chief Secretary, DGP and police chief should submit their replies by 18th.
After supreme court’s order, Mamata Banerjee said that the court’s order will strengthen the moral of the officers.
